In 2013, the USDA published their final rule on Animal Disease Traceability defining requirements for official identification and interstate movement of livestock. Information regarding official identification options and interstate movement requirements/exemptions for each species can be found at the USDA's Animal Disease Traceability website Traceability.
Effective traceability is imperative for a faster disease response time. Electronic official identification options can also assist in farm/veterinary record keeping.
WVDA supports electronic official identification. WVDA will provide a limited number of free 840 RFID tags for official identification to each WV producer (various species) with a valid premise identification number per calendar year. These tags are contingent upon yearly funding. Accredited WV veterinarians are also provided 840 RFID official Brucellosis calfhood vaccination tags. WVDA also has free 840 RFID tags provided by the USDA for usage in WV cattle. To request tags or a premise ID please contact our Animal Health Office at 304-558-2214.
