West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture and WVDA Staff Celebrate National FFA Week with Chapter Visits

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Each year, FFA Chapters nationwide celebrate National FFA Week, a time to recognize the impact of FFA on students and highlight the importance of agricultural education. This year, National FFA Week runs from February 15-22, 2025.

West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture Kent Leonhardt and WVDA staff will visit five FFA chapters across the state to learn about their projects and initiatives.

Scheduled visits include:

  • February 18: Hundred High School
  • February 19: Buffalo High School, Barboursville Middle School
  • February 21: Bridgeport High School, Jefferson High School

FFA members gain valuable hands-on experience through projects such as greenhouse operations, aquaculture production, advanced meat processing labs, and fresh-cut flower cultivation, equipping them with real-world skills and problem-solving abilities.

West Virginia’s FFA membership continues to grow, with 2025 projections reaching 8,000 members across 87 chapters, making agricultural education the state’s fastest-growing Career Technical Education (CTE) program.

“FFA cultivates the next generation of agricultural leaders by instilling hard work, leadership, and innovation,” said Commissioner Leonhardt. “As Commissioner, I’ve seen firsthand the passion of FFA students, reinforcing my confidence in the future of West Virginia agriculture. Supporting these young leaders ensures the success of our farming communities and preserves our rich agricultural heritage.”

FFA’s influence extends into business, science, and technology, shaping careers in veterinary medicine, agricultural science, business leadership, and more.

“FFA opens up a world of career opportunities to all students, including those who may otherwise have limited options,” said Kari Brown, Career Technical Education Coordinator with the West Virginia Department of Education. “Many agricultural teachers credit their own involvement in FFA or the influence of a former teacher for their career path. You will find former FFA members in every industry sector, demonstrating a strong work ethic and servant leadership. The work of our students should be celebrated and showcased not just during FFA Week, but all year long.”
