Farm to School is a state and national program that aims to source more local food in school cafeterias, to encourage students to produce for their own school food programs, and to use garden-based learning programs to educate young people about science, math, agriculture and healthy diets. In West Virginia, food purchasing decisions are made at the county level and there are no state-level requirements for farmers to participate. Schools purchase $100 million worth of food each year, very little of which is produced in West Virginia.
